About the event

Maya Deren turned film into visual poetry. In her independent work she experimented with movement, time and space, and became one of the key figures of the American film avant-garde.

The evening presents three of her short films:

  1. 01Meshes of the Afternoon
  2. 02At Land
  3. 03Ritual in Transfigured Time

The films are accompanied by a live soundtrack by Viliam Solovic, who creates the music on the spot using field recordings, sound experiments and piano. The transformations, returns and repetitions in the films’ imagery are given their own sound.

After each film, PhDr. Radoslav Ragač, PhD., director of the ÚPN Centre for Research on the Period of Unfreedom, introduces the themes of exile, freedom and art. The evening also includes a discussion with the audience.
